The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the UN Environment Programme, MEP Javi López, MEP Lídia Pereira, MEP Kira Peter-Hansen, and MEP Dragoş Pîslaru, are co-hosting an exchange on “Accelerating Action to Reduce Climate-Related Disasters – The Road to COP27”.
Following the release of the recent IPCC Working Group II Report, it is clear that the world is not on the right track to addressing the climate emergency with the level of urgency needed. The report finds that around 3.3 – 3.6 billion people, or around 40% of the world’s population, are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The world needs to prepare for a world warmer than 1.5° – a world characterized by an exponential increase in magnitude, intensity, and frequency of extreme events fuelled by climate change.
