This September in Pittsburgh, the U.S. will host the first-ever Global Clean Energy Action Forum, a joint convening of the 13th Clean Energy Ministerial and the 7th Mission Innovation ministerial. Governments, international organizations, the private sector, academia, innovators, civil society, and early career researchers and policymakers will join together in a three-day event that features a high-level plenary, topical roundtables with energy and science ministers from 31 countries, CEOs and experts, side events, technology demonstrations, and other activities.
The Global Clean Energy Action Forum comes at a pivotal time. We are on the cusp of the most important transition human society has ever seen, and we need to look back at 2022 as the year the world took giant steps to build a new energy economy that benefits all, improves energy security, tackles climate change, and reaps the rewards of a clean energy market that will exceed $23 trillion by the end of this decade.
Goals
The United States Department of Energy has named 2022 the Year of Implementation because it is a pivotal year for the fast action required to deliver on global climate and clean energy ambition from the 2021 Glasgow Climate Summit. The Global Clean Energy Action Forum aims to achieve the following goals:
- Define international clean energy leadership and collaboration in 2022 through an interactive, inspiring, and impactful event spotlighting global leaders fulfilling their climate pledges.
- Focus on actions that deliver a low-cost, zero-emissions energy future that provides opportunities for all, especially good-paying jobs.
- Demonstrate progress in moving along the innovation-to-deployment continuum at an unprecedented pace and scale to meet climate goals, and to innovate with a purpose.
- Reunite, strengthen, and energise the Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation global communities at their first in-person ministerial meeting in over three years. Deliver a memorable event that harnesses the momentum of MI 2.0 to spearhead a decade of clean energy innovation and CEM3.0 to turn ambition into action.
- Feature net-zero goals and clean energy transitions as a whole-of-government, whole-of-society, whole-of-economy endeavor, inclusive of national and local public entities, the private sector, NGOs, and academic institutions.
- Demonstrate progress and concrete actions by obtaining clear updates on CEM and MI workstreams, including reports on progress toward goals and tipping points through written and in-person briefings to Ministers.
- Work towards increasing the geographic diversity of membership to ensure global progress
Theme
The theme for CEM13/MI-7 is Rapid Innovation and Deployment. This means accelerating the pace and scale of innovation through collaboration and shared strategies for the deployment of clean energy technologies. By shortening the innovation to deployment continuum, participants in the Global Clean Energy Action Forum will help deploy commercially-viable technologies during a time to combat the climate crisis in this urgent decade of delivery.

- Jobs and Community
The transition to a net-zero energy system will lead to an overall increase in energy sector jobs, yet the prospect for uneven effects require careful management of the clean energy transition. A focus on workers and communities is crucial to ensure that the future zero-emissions economy creates opportunities for everyone. Implementation will involve every sector of society – including scientists, engineers, builders, educators, consumers, policy officials, and youth, to name just a few.
- Technology Transformation
A wide array of emerging energy technologies, from smarter electricity grids to better batteries to more efficient manufacturing, stand to reduce global emissions while supercharging the clean energy economy. The world needs more innovation to fully unlock the benefits of many technologies under development and to drive down the cost of nascent and existing technologies. We must develop strategies to accelerate the innovation, research, development, demonstration, and deployment of those technologies to speed their contribution to the global energy transformation.
- Unprecedented Deployment
Governments and industry have made laudable progress towards decarbonization. Yet, global emissions are still increasing while many of the technologies necessary to reverse this trend are already available. To meet our climate goals, we must develop creative ways to dramatically accelerate global commercial deployment of clean energy technologies over the next decade and beyond.
