By mid-2018, Abu Dhabi intends to invite developers to bid for a solar project with a capacity of at least 1,177 MW, Reuters reports, citing an official at utility ADWEA.
This will be the Emirate’s second photovoltaic (PV) park. In terms of capacity, it will be as big as the first one, if not larger, Saif Saleh al Sayari, acting director-general of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) told the news agency. He did not elaborate further on the new scheme but said more details will be provided in the coming months.
The first PV complex in Abu Dhabi, the 1,177-MWp Sweihan park, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2019. The project is developed by Japan’s Marubeni Corp (TYO:8002) and China-based JinkoSolar Holding Co Ltd (NYSE:JKS), each with a 20% stake, and ADWEA.
Abu Dhabi’s goal is to produce 7% of its total energy from renewables by 2020.
