The global indicator framework for the Goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a framework of statistical indicators designed to monitor progress, inform policy, and ensure accountability of all stakeholders in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It was developed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Goal Indicators (IAEG-SDGs) and agreed upon at the 48th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission held in March 2017. The global indicator framework was later adopted by the General Assembly on 6 July 2017 and is contained in the General Assembly Resolution on Work of the Statistical Commission pertaining to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In accordance with this resolution, the global SDG indicator framework was comprehensively reviewed in 2020 and the IAEG-SDG is now preparing for a second review, which will be submitted to the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in 2025 for its consideration and decision. The 2025 Comprehensive Review will build on the process of the 2020 Review. This will be the last opportunity for an extensive review of the global indicator framework before the target year of 2030 for achieving the SDGs.

With this side event, the IAEG-SDGs would like to start the initial discussion on the review process. The IAEG-SDGs will brief countries, international agencies, and stakeholders on the principles, criteria, and timeline of the 2025 Comprehensive Review. The event will also provide a platform for custodian agencies, Member States, and civil society organizations to share experiences from the last comprehensive review and to outline their plans and strategies for developing successful proposals for this round.

Objectives

  • Providing information on the 2025 Comprehensive Review, including guiding principles, specific criteria, and timeline;
