Global Fund praises Luxembourg’s additional pledge, bringing total contribution to €14.7 million

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria commend Luxembourg’s additional €3 million pledge, bringing the Grand Duchy’s total contribution to €14.7 million for the upcoming three-year period.

Luxembourg’s commitment is part of the joint Team Europe support to the Global Fund. The European Union and its member states, united as Team Europe, are major donors to the Global Fund, accounting for 33% of total contributions.

“Luxembourg is strongly committed to accelerating the end of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria and to ensure affordable and quality health care for all,” said Franz Fayot, Luxembourg’s Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs. “Our renewed contribution to the Global Fund will help tackle human rights and gender-related barriers to health to ensure protection, prevention, and treatment to the most vulnerable across the world, including women and girls and marginalized communities.”

“Once again, Luxembourg is demonstrating its remarkable leadership in global health and strong commitment towards universal health coverage,” said Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “We are extremely grateful to Luxembourg for their additional support, which will help save millions more lives.”

The United States, when making an intended pledge of $6 billion over three years, announced they would match $1 for every $2 contributed by other donors, hence Luxembourg’s additional pledge will contribute also to leveraging the US match.

Luxembourg has been a supporter of the Global Fund since its inception  20 years ago. With contributions totaling more than €53 million to date, Luxembourg is one of the Global Fund’s largest donors per capita, and the country has steadily increased its pledge over each Replenishment cycle. Since 2009, Luxembourg has dedicated at least 1% of gross national income each year to official development assistance, making the country one of the most generous donors among members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

In early 2019, Luxembourg was the first country to pledge for the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment. The country has fully honored its commitment (€11 million, including a €2 million contribution to support the global COVID-19 response), confirming Luxembourg’s determination to alleviate the burden of the three diseases and build strong, inclusive, and resilient systems for health.

Luxembourg’s bilateral assistance and the crucial work of Luxembourgish civil society organizations and their local partners in countries contribute to addressing structural barriers – such as human rights and gender-related barriers – that hamper access to health services for the most vulnerable and to advance progress in sexual and reproductive health and rights.
