An urgent appeal to help earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey

As Turkey and Syria are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the devastating 6 February earthquakes, Action For Humanity (Syria Relief), a London-based charitable organization, has issued an urgent appeal for donations so that they can provide tents, food, medicine, and hygiene kits to dozens of thousands of families displaced by the disaster.

The three major earthquakes that struck the two countries injured more than 37,000 people and claimed over 12,000 lives and that number is expected to increase in the coming days. It is estimated that approximately 23 million people will be affected across the region, and tens of thousands of people have had their homes destroyed.

Further compounding the suffering is the fact that Turkey is home to millions of refugees, including a large number of Syrians who were displaced during that country’s civil war. Turkish President Erdogan said that 13 million of his country’s inhabitants have been affected by the earthquakes, with some 380,000 people currently being given emergency shelter in hotels and government-run facilities.

Action For Humanity (Syria Relief) has an established office in Gaziantep, which is 11 miles away from the epicentre. The organization has launched emergency response and its teams are currently on the ground in South-Eastern Turkey and Northwest Syria providing emergency supplies in the form of food, emergency kits (blankets, mattresses, plastic sheets, hygiene kits) as well as health emergency kits which include drugs, consumables and fuel for medical facilities.

As the healthcare facilities of Turkey and Syria are being overwhelmed by the number of people seeking treatment, Action For Humanity (Syria Relief) is operating Mobile Health Clinics to save the lives of the most vulnerable people affected by earthquake. It has more than 500 members of staff already onsite, operating mobile health clinics, and they urgently need your support.

Sadly, Action For Humanity (Syria Relief) has already sustained its first casualty from the earthquake as one of its doctors working on the scene in Idlib in northern Syria just across the border with Turkey, along with her child, was killed on Monday.

How You Can Help

Action For Humanity is looking for funding partners to support its work for the most vulnerable population affected by earthquake in Northwest Syria.

For anyone willing to contribute financially, we recommend making a donation via http://www.actionforhumanity.org/.

For reference, Action For Humanity (Syria Relief) has stated that one pack of “ready to eat” food for single-family costs approximately £40. Likewise, an emergency kit with blankets, tents and personal hygiene supplies also costs approximately £40. Health emergency kits (which include medicines and fuel to power mobile health facilities) are being provided for approximately £100.

If you or your company would like to help, please consider making a donation today. If you are able to contribute, 100% of the proceeds will go directly to Syria Relief, a registered charitable organization under the aegis of the UK-based charity Action for Humanity which works around the world to help displaced people, refugees, and people suffering from the devastation of war.
