There is a large financing gap for the carbon net-zero transition in Asia, prompting measures to mobilize greater private capital. To tap financing opportunities in the region, domestic and global financial institutions require a strong understanding of their transition-related risk and return profile and how it fits their risk appetite. Stakeholder collaboration is also critical to promote data essential for informed capital allocation with useful corporate disclosure on transition, as well as innovative public-private finance schemes, and comparable cross-border carbon pricing.
This ADBI-SOAS University of London Centre for Sustainable Finance virtual conference will feature new research on sustainable finance and mobilizing private capital to achieve climate goals on net zero carbon emissions, with a focus on Asia. Topics to be addressed include the identification of transition-related financial risks and risk mitigation measures, the evaluation of blended finance mechanisms, transition finance-related criteria and frameworks, obstacles to ESG investment, incentivizing private sector investment in carbon emission reduction, and the implications of carbon-pricing for just transition and wider financial stability.
Objectives
- Explore current and future policy challenges posed by the need for scalable sustainable finance for the transition to net-zero carbon emissions in Asia
- Examine public-private sector risk-sharing and blended finance schemes
- Discuss carbon net-zero transition modeling, including developments on corporate emissions disclosure, transition paths, and the carbon-offset market

- Policymakers, researchers from think tanks, universities, and international organizations, and interested members of the public

- Enhanced understanding of sustainable finance policy challenges and collaborative solutions for advancing Asia’s carbon net-zero transition
- The greater impetus for research dialogue and collaboration
- Selected papers featured during the virtual conference will be considered for inclusion in a special issue of the Global Finance Journal. In addition, in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sustainable Finance & Investment, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit their manuscripts to a regular issue of the journal with fast-track review.
