Afghanistan: GPE urges de facto authorities to allow girls back into secondary school

The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) condemns the decision to ban girls from returning to secondary school as the new school year starts in Afghanistan. Secondary school girls in Afghanistan have been excluded from education since September 2021.

This puts millions of girls at risk of never gaining the skills they need to thrive and contribute to building the stable and prosperous future that the people of Afghanistan deserve.

Young women and girls must never be shut out of school or face obstacles in pursuing their education. All children, no matter their gender, have a right to an education. All Afghan girls should be allowed to secondary school without delay. Schools must always be protected and provide a safe environment for children to learn.

Working closely with partners, GPE remains committed to supporting quality education for all children in Afghanistan.
