Powerful earthquake strikes Afghanistan

A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan. This comes less than a year after the quake that killed over 1,000 people in the country last June. CARE Afghanistan Country Director, Victor Moses, shared the organization’s main concerns at the moment.

“We are devastated that another earthquake has hit Afghanistan, the second in less than a year. The epicenter hit in the northern province of Badakhshan, yet our teams also felt the impact in Kabul. While numbers are still in flux in terms of those impacted, we know that over 60 families have completely lost their homes”.

From the previous experience in supporting Afghans following the earthquake in June last year, CI know that while immediate lifesaving support will be required to deal with physical injuries, women and children are also frequently the most affected following the destruction of their homes, which can leave them in precarious and vulnerable situations.

This is a country where extreme hunger and the risk of diseases such as cholera remain complicating factors. CARE Afghanistan is assessing the situation, and its hearts are with all Afghans impacted at this difficult time.
