Brussels, Belgium & Online
The 5th edition aims to bring together leading experts from academia, industry, and government to share best practices and insights on how to achieve deforestation-free global value chains. Key themes to be discussed include the role of technology in monitoring and verifying deforestation-free commitments, the effectiveness of policy instruments in promoting sustainable land use and product traceability, and the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships in driving systemic change. The roundtable seeks to provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and explore opportunities to build more sustainable and resilient global value chains.
Deforestation is a critical global challenge with serious environmental, social, and economic implications. According to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), conservation, improved management, and restoration of forests and other ecosystems offer the largest share of economic mitigation potential, with reduced deforestation in tropical regions having the highest total mitigation potential. From 2001 to 2015, just seven agricultural commodities β cattle, oil palm, soy, cocoa, rubber, coffee, and
plantation wood fiber β accounted for more than a quarter of global tree cover loss, making deforestation-free agricultural commodity production and trade an essential action to address this problem.
To that end, the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the World Resources Institute are organizing a public roundtable event to discuss the latest advances in science, technology, and policy in relation to deforestation-free Global Supply Chains. This event builds on the success of the series of four roundtables organized by the International Trade Centre (ITC) in 2022.
Objectives
The roundtable aims to bring together leading experts from academia, business, industry, and government to share best practices and insights on how to achieve deforestation-free global value chains.
Key themes to be discussed include:
- Future-facing business models, with sustainability at the heart: Deforestation is a
critical but not the only factor contributing to climate change and in the scope of potential policy measures. How can businesses prepare to avoid potential supply chain disruptions by additional regulations accounting for environmental sustainability? - Cooperation and standardization across different systems: how can technological
solutions and related data contribute to traceability, transparency, and
interoperability to create impactful, scalable systems?
The roundtable seeks to provide a platform for stakeholders to collaborate and explore opportunities to build more sustainable and resilient global value chains, and across all topics, learn from lessons learned, best practices, and challenges along the way to create more sustainable land use.
