UNRWA welcomes the generous additional contribution of EUR 19 million from the Government of Germany in support of the Agency’s 90-day Initial Emergency Response to the Escalation in the Gaza Strip Flash Appeal.
The contribution was announced at a meeting between the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini in Amman.
This critical support comes in response to the deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, which is worsening every day. Some 629,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) seeking shelter in 150 UNRWA facilities are facing shortages of water, fuel, electricity, and food. This new German funding will provide for additional food assistance to Palestine Refugees in the Gaza Strip.
“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Government of Germany for their steadfast support of UNRWA’s mission, and the millions of Palestine Refugees we serve, during this devastating and unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza. UNRWA is extremely proud of our decades-long cooperation and is grateful for the rapid mobilization of funds that Germany has repeatedly put forth this year to respond to the immediate and ever-evolving needs of Palestine Refugees across the region. With the ongoing crisis deepening further each day, I urge other donors to follow Germany’s lead in recognizing and responding to the severity of the dire conditions of the people of Gaza by providing vital financial support. This will enable UNRWA to continue functioning as a predictable and reliable partner amidst these catastrophic circumstances,” said UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.
“We see the plight of the Palestinian people. Basic provisions are running out. That is why Germany has increased its humanitarian assistance to the many people in need, the families, and children in Gaza by EUR 50 million, including EUR 19 million for UNRWA.
UNRWA is a key partner in bringing basic assistance like food and water to where it is needed most,“ said Special Envoy for Humanitarian Issues in the Near and Middle East Deike Potzel.
