Islamic Relief is preparing a response to flash flooding affecting communities in central and northern Pakistan. The flooding comes amid a particularly intense monsoon season, with heavy rains causing significant damage.
Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are most heavily affected. The situation has been exacerbated by unusually high temperatures that have accelerated snow melting in KPK, Azad Jammu Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Balochistan, Sindh, and Islamabad have also been impacted by the heavy rains. Pakistan’s national disaster agency has reported 91 deaths and 212 injuries, as well as damage to 435 homes. The government has begun rescue operations, evacuations, and the establishment of relief camps in affected areas.
Heavy rains are expected to continue until at least 6 August, and a severe weather alert has been issued for this period.
Islamic Relief’s response
Islamic Relief is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with district, provincial, and national authorities to assess the current situation.
Islamic Relief has operations in several of the affected states and the emergency team is on high alert and prepared for deployment.
