From 22 to 29 September 2024, New York City, USA will host the annual Climate Week. Each year, business leaders, political change makers, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world, gather to drive the transition, speed up progress and champion change. As part of the event, the EITI is organising a couple of sessions with partners on 25 and 26 September.
Climate Week NYC is the largest annual climate event of its kind, bringing together over 600 events and activities across the City of New York – in person, hybrid and online. Each year, business leaders, political change makers, local decision takers and civil society representatives of all ages and backgrounds, from all over the world, gather to drive the transition, speed up progress, and champion change that is already happening.
Climate Week NYC is hosted by Climate Group, an international non-profit whose purpose is to drive climate action, fast. Climate Group hosts the official program during the week that brings together the most senior international figures from business, government, civil society and the climate sector.
This year, Climate Week NYC is being held from September 22-29, 2024. The event takes place every year in partnership with the United Nations General Assembly and is run in coordination with the United Nations and the City of New York.
Main events taking place
This year Climate Week NYC will present a full program of some 600 events and activities in New York City. For those unable to attend in-person, we’ll stream key sessions from the week available through our on demand page. Wholly digital events are also included in Climate Week NYC’s Events program.
The Climate Week NYC Opening Ceremony is the most high-profile moment of the week. Taking place on Sunday, September 22. The event will feature major announcements, discussions, and interviews with international leadership from business, government, and the climate community. Recent speakers included Prince Charles, Tim Cook, Jacinda Adern, the Hon. Chris Bowen, Kristalina Georgieva, Kathy Hochul, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
On Monday and Tuesday, September 23 and 24, 2024, Climate Group will host The Hub Live. These sessions will bring together more than 1,000 of the most influential leaders from business, government, and the climate sector across key themes including:
- The New Industrial Revolution – We’re going through a shift that the world hasn’t seen since the start of the 20th century. The shift of the fossil fuel-based society to a green economy will drive a seismic change not just in corporate energy use, our business models, and the skills needed, but also in the way we build, live, and learn.
- The Energy and Transport Transition – The global energy system and transportation are among the biggest global emitters, and the corporate sector is playing a key role in the push towards the decarbonization of the interrelated systems. But with every curb in the road, new challenges appear, and it’s vital we see them coming so we can prepare for them through a smarter, integrated, net-zero transport-energy nexus.
- Nature, Food Systems and Health – The power of nature to reduce emissions and restore health to our food systems must be scaled to reserve the grim reality of global warming. The nexus between climate and health are inextricably linked with climate change recognized as the largest public health crisis of our time where success is measured not only on carbon emission reduction but the impact it has on human lives.
- Leadership and Green Growth - To speed up the transition, we need to finance solutions and technologies at scale – but funders can be hesitant to finance solutions that aren’t scalable yet. To break that deadlock, we’ll be looking at the finance that exists, new models, ways of collaboration between governments and the private sector, and the importance of the transition being fair and just.
This year’s theme
It’s Time.
We’re in the age of urgency. Investment in clean energy and net zero technologies is higher than ever, but 2024 started out warmer than ever recorded, following a year that already broke through the annual average 1.5-degree C mark. People and companies are waking up to the fact that we need to act, fast, as they see the effects of climate change all around them.
Yet we’re still not going fast enough, and together we need to break down barriers that are holding us back. Climate Group will push for that in 2024. With Climate Week NYC, we’re putting inspiring businesses and governments that are driving the momentum front and center. We’re pushing the transition into the mainstream of business and government – convince hesitant companies and governments to start taking action by inspiring them, and showing what can be achieved.
Climate Week NYC is the biggest annual climate event of its kind, with leaders from the world of business, tech, politics, academia, and civil society. It joins the forces of inspiring frontrunners that have the means, the scale and the power to drive the transition forward and turn those who are not yet going fast enough into action takers.
At the same time, Climate Week NYC is a platform for some 600 events across New York City, set up by people and organizations that want to push the needle on climate. That makes Climate Week NYC the event that drives climate action by those at the very top of business and politics, but also by communities, artists and activists, bound by the same message:
It’s Time to push towards unstoppable progress, to triple renewable capacity and double energy efficiency. To accelerate scalable innovation, for example in energy storage, grid infrastructure, low carbon steel and concrete production, and in finance.
It’s Time to lead.
