5th Policy Dialogue on Social Protection and Development

📅 2 – 3 December 2024
Paris, France & Virtual

The sustainable development goals to end poverty and hunger are unlikely to be met. By 2030, an estimated 575 million people will be living in extreme poverty, and only about one-third of countries will meet the target to halve national poverty levels. Global hunger is back to 2005 levels and more than 600 million people are likely to face hunger in 2030.

Social protection will be key to changing this trajectory. Investing in social protection programs can help to reduce poverty and improve health, education, and nutrition outcomes. It can also support vulnerable groups who face additional challenges due to intensifying extreme weather events.

This year’s Policy Dialogue on Social Protection and Development will focus on the role of social protection in the fight against hunger and poverty. Sessions will discuss the evidence around social programs dedicated to improving the nutrition and food security of children, poor households, and smallholder farmers, the evolution of social registries as instruments to improve identification of beneficiaries, and the role of social protection in mitigating and adapting to climate-related risks and shocks.
