CABEI approves emergency aid to support families affected by Tropical Storm Sara in Honduras

In solidarity with Honduran families and response to the devastating effects of Tropical Storm Sara, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) has approved a non-reimbursable donation of US$500,000 to the Republic of Honduras as part of its Emergency and Natural Disaster Aid program. The purpose of this support is to alleviate the situation of families affected by the heavy rains and severe impacts caused by the climatic phenomenon.

The resources will be used to meet the most urgent needs of the affected communities, including the procurement of food, potable water, medicines, medical equipment, supplies for shelters, and materials for the recovery of the damage caused. The aid is aimed at mitigating the most serious effects of the disaster, such as soil saturation, landslides, damage to homes, and impacts on essential infrastructure, among others.

In addition, this contribution will help strengthen the immediate response capacities of the Government of Honduras and local humanitarian organizations, ensuring a more efficient recovery in the short and medium term in the most affected and difficult-to-access areas.

Currently, Tropical Storm Sara remains stationary off the Caribbean coast of Honduras, just 25 kilometers northwest of Trujillo and 38 kilometers from Guanaja, Bay Islands. The phenomenon has generated heavy rains and maximum sustained winds of up to 85 km/h, moving slowly westward, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides in several areas of the Honduran Caribbean.

CABEI reiterates its commitment to regional integration and sustainable development, making the necessary resources available to its member countries to address emergencies, protect vulnerable populations, and promote resilience in the face of natural disasters. This initiative reflects the strong collaboration between the Bank and the Government of Honduras to mitigate the adverse effects of this situation and support the country’s recovery.
