Islamic Relief is preparing to support communities affected by heavy rains and flooding in Mali. More than 80 villages in the northern and central Timbuktu and Douentza regions have been impacted by the emergency, which comes amid months of above-average rainfall.
Flood waters have swept into homes and across fields, damaging rice crops ahead of harvest and clogging livestock grazing areas.
The government and other agencies are assessing the extent of the damage, which is believed to be substantial. Communities have been affected in Gourma Rharous circle (Banikane, Rharous, Serere, Hamzacoma, Haribomo, and Bambara Maoude communes) and Douentza circle (Diaptodji commune), while overflow from the Niger River has swept into all neighboring communities.
Islamic Relief’s response
Islamic Relief has a presence and implements programs in some of the affected areas. The organization is coordinating with the relevant authorities and other humanitarian organizations to ensure we can respond as quickly and helpfully as possible.
IRW plans to distribute food, shelter, and other essentials to affected families in Gourma Rharous circle. This assistance will be provided through vouchers, giving people the opportunity to choose the items they most need. Islamic Relief has been working in Mali since 1997 and stands ready to support communities affected by the devastating flooding.
