IRENA and Brazil launch new Global Energy Planning Summit

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Brazil will bring together leaders and experts in Rio de Janeiro on June 3 and 4 for the first Global Energy Planning Summit. The gathering will kick off the Global Coalition for Energy Planning, shaped by Brazil’s G20 2024 leadership. The Coalition’s purpose is to help countries in the Global South develop practical energy plans that encourage investment and make it easier to shift to renewable power.

The summit will gather senior officials from energy and finance ministries, private sector leaders, and experts to build a global network focused on practical energy planning. One major aim is to lower investment risks—often a sticking point for clean energy projects in lower-income countries—and encourage private capital to flow into renewable energy.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera highlighted Brazil’s experience in using long-term plans to draw private investment and grow renewables. “Brazil has shown how planning that lines up investment with strategy can reduce risks and scale up clean energy,” said La Camera.

Brazil’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, added, “By advancing the Global Coalition for Energy Planning, Brazil reaffirms its commitment to multilateral dialogue and to strengthening tools that connect planning, policy, and finance for a more inclusive and sustainable energy future.”

The summit aims to agree on work priorities, set a roadmap for coordination, and map out partners ready to collaborate. Organizers hope strong planning will inspire more political support and practical action to fuel the global transition to sustainable energy.
