UK backs new ICAO projects for aviation safety and sustainability

The Government of United Kingdom is putting up about CAD 2.2 million to help make flying safer and greener, backing key parts of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) long-term plan, according to a press release.

This funding will help ICAO push forward on its 2026–2050 goals: zero fatalities and net zero emissions for air travel, everywhere. The UK’s support will go toward digital upgrades and changes inside ICAO’s Secretariat, which are needed to make these big goals possible.

A big chunk of the money will help set up the ICAO Finvest Hub, which is tied to the group’s program for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). ICAO says SAF could deliver more than half the emissions cuts needed for net zero, but getting the money to scale up production is a challenge. The new hub is meant to unlock new ways to finance SAF projects around the world.

The UK’s contribution isn’t just about the environment. It will also boost global aviation safety oversight and provide extra training and support for countries in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, with a special focus on CARICOM states.
