Greene secures €224 million to expand waste recycling in Spain

The Spanish company Greene Enterprise has secured €224 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Santander to build five plants across Spain that will treat non-recyclable waste, according to an press release. These facilities will use advanced pyrolysis technology to turn waste, including industrial and urban solid waste, biomass, and sludge, into useful materials rather than sending it to landfills or incineration.

The plants are expected to be operational between 2026 and 2029 and will process over 200,000 tonnes of waste per year. They will produce pyrolytic oil, char, and other reusable products, supporting Spain’s circular economy and helping cut carbon emissions.

Locations include Muel (Zaragoza), La Selva del Camp (Tarragona), San Cristóbal de Entreviñas (Zamora), Madridejos (Toledo), and As Somozas (A Coruña). Two facilities—Valogreene CML Madridejos and Valogreene Recinor As Somozas—are close to finishing construction and should launch in 2026. Regional authorities in Aragón and Galicia have recognized two plants as priorities, showing their importance to local development.

Building and running these plants will also create jobs and boost local economies. Each site is expected to generate more than 20 direct jobs and over 40 indirect jobs in the surrounding communities.
