The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) shared its approach to greener operations at the 8th International Congress on Leadership in Sustainable Construction in San Salvador, the bank announced. CABEI leaders outlined how day-to-day decisions and long-term plans now factor in environmental goals across the region.
During their presentation, “Sustainability in action: CABEI, a positive bank for the planet,” speakers explained how the bank has started using less energy, cutting carbon, and improving the way it manages waste. Since 2019, CABEI has picked up ISO 14001 certification for environmental management and LEED awards for its facilities in El Salvador and Nicaragua.
The bank pointed to results in El Salvador over the past two years—saving 119 tons of CO₂ by using solar power and hybrid vehicles, offsetting another 387 tons of emissions, and generating 170 megawatts of solar energy. Staff have also recycled nearly nine tons of waste, showing real progress in everyday operations.
CABEI plans to get ISO 14001 certification for all branches by 2029. The bank’s next goals include removing more emissions than it creates, keeping waste out of landfills, and returning more water to the environment than it uses.
The congress, hosted by the El Salvador Green Building Council, brought together experts on sustainable buildings, smarter cities, and climate change. CABEI hopes its example will push more banks and companies to take practical steps toward greener operations.
