OSCE supports students in climate action

About 35 students from universities around Turkmenistan gathered in Ashgabat on July 29, 2025, for a workshop on youth negotiation and climate security, organized by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), following the official statement. The event aimed to build practical skills for young people involved in UNICEF’s Youth Climate Summer School, helping them engage on climate and security challenges.

The workshop highlighted OSCE’s environmental efforts as part of its broader security work, including a focus on gender equality and inclusion. William Leaf, Acting Head of the OSCE Centre, stressed, “Young people’s voices aren’t just important—they’re essential. This workshop will help them turn ideas into action and push for stronger environmental security.”

Finalists of the OSCE Young Women 4 Peace Initiative, supported by the European Union, led discussions about youth roles in climate and water negotiations. Participants explored how Central Asia can raise its profile in global talks and practiced negotiation skills using real examples and success stories for inspiration.

Together, the students drafted a youth resolution on climate security, gender equality, and regional cooperation. This statement will be part of Turkmenistan’s National Youth Statement for COP30, giving young people a stronger say in setting the international climate and security agenda.

The seminar brought together students from several institutions, including the Institute of International Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkmen State Institute of Architecture and Construction, International Oil and Gas University, State Medical University, and Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University, creating a space for future climate leaders to grow and connect.
