ASEAN-Australia counter trafficking

At the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in Sydney, Australia announced a ten-year, $80 million commitment to continue the long-running collaboration with ASEAN to combat human trafficking in the region.

Ending the scourge of human trafficking, modern slavery, and forced labor are a priority for Australia. This transnational crime crosses borders and requires a regional response. ASEAN-Australia Counter-Trafficking will build on the 15-year history of supporting improved criminal justice sector responses to these crimes in ASEAN.

“We will work with ASEAN states as they implement their landmark ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which entered into force in March 2017.” stated the media release of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop.

The new investment will also work with civil society, the private sector and the Bali Process on People Smuggling, Trafficking in Persons and Related Transnational Crime.
