UK funds major solar plant for 82,000 Filipino families

A major solar power plant broke ground this month in Tantangan, South Cotabato, bringing clean electricity to more than 82,000 Filipino families through Government of United Kingdom backing, according to an official statement. The 99-megawatt facility costs 4.49 billion and marks another win for UK-Philippines energy partnerships. British International Investment teamed up with HSBC and Pentagreen Capital to fund the project. Once running, it’ll cut 66,000 tonnes of carbon emissions yearly. This shows how UK money and know-how are changing the Philippines’ power game.

The project builds on other UK energy investments across the Philippines, from wind farms in Luzon and Visayas to what will be the country’s biggest solar plant in Nueva Ecija. These deals help communities and businesses while fighting climate change. The partnerships show both countries are serious about clean energy. They’re tackling the Philippines’ growing need for electricity with green solutions. The collaboration proves international funding can drive real change.

International solar company ib vogt is developing the Tantangan plant—their second big solar project in Mindanao. Construction will create local jobs and boost the national power grid that serves millions. “This new joint financing facility will support a 99MWp solar power project,” said Mike Welch from the British Embassy Manila. He stressed the positive impact on communities and businesses. The plant also helps the Philippines shift away from dirty energy sources.

Mindanao has long struggled with power shortages and unreliable electricity. Families and businesses there will finally get steady, affordable clean power once the solar farm starts operating. The project fits the Philippines’ push to use more renewable energy and less fossil fuel. South Cotabato will see economic benefits through new jobs and better energy infrastructure. The solar farm will make the region more energy secure while protecting the environment.
