UK helps Lebanon launch renewable energy action plan

The Government of United Kingdom helped Lebanon launch its National Renewable Energy Action Plan for 2025-2030 at the Lebanon Grand Energy Event this week, according to a the government announcement. British Ambassador Hamish Cowell and Energy Minister Joe Saddi unveiled the plan on September 25 during the three-day event.

The UK has been working with the Lebanese Centre for Energy Conservation since 2024 to give technical help for updating the roadmap. The plan spells out Lebanon’s renewable energy goals for the next few years. Britain wants to help partner countries switch to cleaner energy and cut their dependence on fossil fuels.

Lebanon’s power situation is a mess. Rolling blackouts are normal and the aging grid can barely keep the lights on. The country imports most of its energy and burns expensive fuel oil to make electricity. The economic crisis made things worse, so many businesses and homes have to run noisy, dirty diesel generators that cost a fortune.

The new plan is Lebanon’s game plan for switching to solar and wind power. “The UK is proud to support Lebanon in shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future,” Ambassador Cowell said after the launch. He called it “a vital step toward unlocking Lebanon’s energy transition” and said it shows “a commitment to the Lebanese people and environment.” The UK’s help aims to spark innovation, change policies, and bring in investment for renewable energy.

The plan should help Lebanon become more energy independent and create a power system that actually works for people without emptying government coffers or choking cities with generator smoke.
