The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), working with the Financial Times Group, brought together leading global investors, policymakers, and financial institutions for the Global Sukuk Summit 2025 in London under the theme “Capitalizing on Sukuk Beyond Traditional Markets,” the IsDB announced. The event explored how Sukuk, Islamic bonds that comply with Sharia principles, can expand beyond traditional markets and drive sustainable finance worldwide.

In his opening remarks, IsDB Group Chairman Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser said Sukuk have evolved from a niche product into a globally recognized and trusted asset class that links finance with real development outcomes. He described Sukuk as capital with purpose, channeling financing into infrastructure, renewable energy, healthcare, and education—projects that directly serve communities. Since 2003, the IsDB has raised over $55 billion in Sukuk through nearly 80 issuances, including almost $6 billion in Green and Sustainability Sukuk.

The Bank’s latest €500 million Green Sukuk, listed earlier in the day at the London Stock Exchange’s Market Open, attracted record investor demand—confirming Sukuk’s credibility as a tool for sustainable finance. Al Jasser also praised the partnership with FT Live, the International Capital Market Association, and the London Stock Exchange, noting their contributions to advancing global dialogue on sustainable finance.

The summit featured a keynote address by Saudi Central Bank Governor Ayman Mohammed Al-Sayari, who highlighted Sukuk’s role in supporting sustainable economic diversification and strengthening global financial stability. A fireside chat followed between Al Jasser and Samir Assaf, Chairman of MENAT, HSBC Middle East Holdings, moderated by Financial Times Senior Markets Correspondent Ian Smith. The discussion covered Sukuk’s growth trajectory, ongoing innovation in issuance, and increasing appeal to both conventional and Islamic investors.

The program also included a keynote interview with Victoria Saporta, Executive Director for Markets at the Bank of England, moderated by Financial Times Lex Writer Jennifer Hughes. Saporta shared insights on integrating Sukuk more deeply into global financial frameworks and improving regulatory cooperation to support sustainable capital flows. The summit concluded with a call for collaboration among regulators, investors, and development institutions to unlock new pathways for inclusive and sustainable growth.
