The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have signed a new partnership to strengthen regional cooperation on migration across Central America and the Dominican Republic, the two institutions announced.

The three-year agreement, signed in Tegucigalpa and renewable upon mutual agreement, creates a framework for collaboration on joint projects that address some of the most pressing migration challenges in the region. These include sustainable reintegration of returnees, labor migration, human trafficking prevention, access to basic services, climate migration, and community inclusion. The initiative will also focus on capacity building, sharing technical knowledge, and fostering coordinated action to support migrants and vulnerable populations.

“This agreement reflects our shared vision that migration, when properly managed, can be a driver of sustainable development and inclusion,” said María Moita, IOM Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. “By joining forces with CABEI, we can design evidence-based solutions that place migrants and communities at the center.”

CABEI Executive President Gisela Sánchez said the partnership underscores the bank’s commitment to inclusive growth and regional development. “Formalizing this alliance is a decisive step toward developing a migration program that tackles the structural causes of migration and promotes long-term social and economic stability,” she said.

The two organizations will now begin planning their first set of joint projects and setting up mechanisms to track the impact of their collaboration. Through this alliance, CABEI and IOM aim to strengthen regional resilience and ensure that migration contributes to sustainable and equitable development.
