The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved an $80 million loan to Banco Regional de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul (BRDE) to help rebuild critical infrastructure and support small businesses recovering from the devastating 2024 floods in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, as detailed in an IDB news release. The Prosul Reergue Sul project will ease credit constraints for infrastructure developers and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) with annual revenues of up to R$300 million directly or indirectly affected by the disaster. Up to 7% of MSME financing will be directed to women-led businesses.
The project targets investments in transportation, energy, and water infrastructure to strengthen resilience against future natural disasters, while helping businesses restore production of goods and services. The broader population of Rio Grande do Sul stands to benefit indirectly through stronger infrastructure, higher productivity, and job creation. The IDB loan carries a 25-year maturity with a 5.5-year grace period.
This approval is part of a wider IDB response to the 2024 Rio Grande do Sul floods, which included emergency resources, donations, and technical experts deployed to assess losses and damage. The bank says the initiative reflects its commitment to supporting both immediate recovery and the state’s medium- and long-term resilience against climate-related shocks.
