The government of the Indian state of Gujarat has given the green light to the proposed development of a 5,000-MW solar park in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).
This was announced on Tuesday by Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, who said that the giant project is expected to attract a total investment of about INR 250 billion (USD 3.84bn/EUR 3.1bn).
The planned solar power complex will be constructed on 11,000 hectares (27,182 acres) of land along the Gulf of Khambhat in DSIR. The project will create jobs for more than 20,000 people, according to the minister. It is part of India’s goal to have 175 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2022.
As unveiled recently, a solar tender in Gujarat targeting 500 MW of grid-connected capacity has received bids as low as INR 2.98 per kWh. This was one of several wind and solar tenders initiated by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) as it seeks to fulfill its Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) and achieve a goal of procuring 7,000 MW of renewables capacity by 2022. In a solar auction it held last year, tariffs fell as low as INR 2.65 per kWh.
