The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a US$ 207 million loan to Enerjisa Enerji, Türkiye’s leading electricity distribution company, to modernize and expand its distribution networks across the Baskent, Ayedas and Toroslar regions, according to a press release published on 2 September 2026. The investment aims to strengthen network reliability and service quality while supporting the country’s energy transition. It arrives as Türkiye accelerates renewable energy deployment and expands grid capacity. Enerjisa Enerji serves about a quarter of Türkiye’s population. The financing marks a further step in a longstanding partnership between the two institutions.

Türkiye is currently accelerating its energy transition and expanding renewable energy capacity. As electricity demand grows and additional renewable capacity is integrated into the grid, resilient and efficient distribution networks are essential for a secure and reliable supply. Enerjisa Enerji plays a key role in this development given its extensive customer base. The company operates across the Baskent, Ayedas and Toroslar regions. The EBRD’s support responds to these evolving infrastructure needs.

The project will contribute to Türkiye’s green transition by reducing distribution losses, generating energy savings and lowering carbon emissions. It will also enhance the company’s operational resilience through technical cooperation support, addressing emerging risks tied to the network’s increasing digitalization. The financing will benefit from a guarantee under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) Hi-Bar Programme of the European Union. This guarantee is designed to help accelerate investment in critical electricity infrastructure. The transaction is the first electricity distribution project supported under the EFSD+ Hi-Bar Guarantee Programme and the first EFSD+ backed SIG project signed in Türkiye.

Sule Kilic, Director, Energy Eurasia at the EBRD, highlighted the importance of the investment for Türkiye’s energy transition.

“As Türkiye advances its energy transition, strengthening electricity networks is becoming increasingly important. Through our longstanding partnership with Enerjisa Enerji, we are supporting investments that will modernise and expand network capacity, improve service quality for millions of consumers and help ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are delivered across the country,” she said.

Enerjisa Enerji Chief Financial Officer Philipp Ulbrich noted that the financing reflects the company’s strategy of long-term and diversified funding. He welcomed the continued cooperation with the EBRD and the guarantee provided by the EFSD+. He added that support from strong international partners will help sustain long-term investments while maintaining financial stability.

The project also strengthens Enerjisa Enerji’s efforts to promote gender inclusion in the energy sector. The company will continue implementing policies to increase access to employment in the traditionally male-dominated sector, while exploring opportunities to support employees with caregiving responsibilities and enhance workplace inclusion. The EBRD remains one of Türkiye’s key investors, with more than €25 billion invested in the country to date, largely in the private sector. This new financing consolidates the bank’s role in supporting critical infrastructure. It also reinforces cooperation between the EBRD, the European Union and Enerjisa Enerji in advancing Türkiye’s energy transition.
