Islamic Relief delivers aid to 8,000 people affected by Nepal floods

Islamic Relief has reached 8,000 people in northern Nepal with emergency assistance following the devastating floods that struck the region in August 2026, according to a press release issued by Islamic Relief Worldwide on September 17, 2026. Shelter kits containing tarpaulins, rope, blankets, pillows, and foam mattresses have been distributed to displaced families across the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts. The organization has now begun shifting its focus from immediate relief toward longer-term recovery. A 3-year Response and Recovery Strategy has been developed to guide this transition. The response comes three weeks after the initial disaster struck the country.

The floods have caused widespread destruction across northern Nepal, leaving thousands of families without shelter, safe water, or access to essential services. Many affected residents remain unable to return safely to their homes. Preliminary assessments by Nepalese authorities estimate that the floods caused damage equivalent to $2.70 billion. Coordinated search and rescue operations continue in the affected regions. The situation on the ground remains critical.

Over the next two weeks, Islamic Relief plans to deliver food packs to 550 affected families and shelter kits to a further 950 families. The death toll in Nepal has reached 1,399, while an estimated 5,179 people are still missing. More than 84,000 people have been left in need of some form of humanitarian assistance. Currently, 2,150 people are taking shelter across 30 separate displacement camps or holding centers. Unstable land, river erosion, and damaged settlements continue to pose challenges for those seeking safety.

Displaced families continue to face difficult living conditions, including limited access to safe water, sanitation, and essential services. Many of those displaced may be relocated again to safer locations as risks persist. Islamic Relief’s longer-term strategy will focus on providing transitional shelters, restoring water and sanitation services, and helping rebuild livelihoods. The organization stated that “the situation remains critical” in the affected areas. Recovery efforts are expected to continue over the coming years.

The organization has urged the public to donate to its Nepal Floods Emergency Appeal. Aid delivery is ongoing in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
