ENGIE and eleQtra have signed a Joint Development Agreement to construct the 50MW Ada Wind power project in the eastern part of the Greater Accra Region in Ghana, a suitable location for its combination of strong wind resources, open land and access to transmission infrastructure.
The project initiated by power and transportation projects developer in sub-Saharan Africa, eleQtra will require a $120 million investment to construct and begin operations as initial studies into its viability have already been completed.
“eleQtra is delighted to have ENGIE joining the development of what we believe will be the first wind energy project in Ghana. We will now start the next phase of the development in order to bring the project as soon as possible into operation,” eleQtra Partner Ebbe Hamilton.
It will contribute to the Ghanaian government’s objective of leveraging renewable resources to generate 10 per cent of its electricity. ENGIE which develops and manages power production capacity from various energy sources in Africa currently has centralized electricity capacitates of 3, 000 MW on the continent.
The Ada Wind project is aligned to the West African country’s ambition to becoming a power generation hub in the region, exporting power to neighbouring countries in the West African Power Pool.
