The U.S. Government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), along with partners Girl Up, Intel, Google, the U.S. Department of State and the Millennium Challenge Account-Georgia (MCA-Georgia), is hosting the Women in Science (WiSci) Camp in Tbilisi from August 12 through 25.
The camp brings together 100 girls from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the U.S. to build science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) and leadership skills. It is the result of a public-private partnership designed to expand STEAM exposure and opportunities for adolescent girls.
Led by industry experts from Intel, Google, Microsoft, and the American Society for Microbiology, the WiSci Girls STEAM Camp focuses on the applications of science and technology in creating a safer, more prosperous and secure world. Campers will learn about coding and app development, engineering and robotics, micro- and molecular biology, satellite mapping and sustainable development. The girls will have the opportunity to present project ideas and designs that use the skills and tools they gained to address a social or development challenge in their communities and around the world.
The WiSci Girls STEAM camp is part of the U.S. government’s efforts to empower the next generation of female leaders, especially in the STEAM fields, supporting prosperity and stability across the globe. Promoting gender equality and supporting women’s economic empowerment is fundamental to achieving MCC’s mission of reducing poverty through economic growth. Empowering women leads to stronger economies, increases in household incomes and higher profits for businesses.
In addition to the camp, in Georgia MCC is investing $140 million to strengthen the quality of education in science, technology, engineering, and math fields, including efforts to increase women’s participation. Through MCC’s grant, students from the U.S. also have the opportunity to study abroad in Georgia through a partnership with San Diego State University.
