Empowering adolescent girls through education in Tanzania

UNESCO is increasing safe spaces for learning, promoting girls’ empowerment, and addressing community resistance to girls’ education.

From 2015-2018, 30 secondary schools, 3,000 students and 2,500 girls in Tanzania benefitted from a UNESCO project implemented through the UNESCO Malala Fund for Girls’ Right to Education, to enhance adolescent girls’ retention and performance at a secondary school level.

Among the key results, rates of teenage pregnancies and early marriage have decreased, and girls have gained new skills and confidence through safe spaces.
