The new Framework Agreement between the European Union and Australia applies on a provisional basis as of 4 October. This Agreement will strengthen and deepen Australia-EU relations by identifying concrete ways in which they can work together in a closer and more effective manner.
The Agreement, which was signed in August 2017, combined with ongoing negotiations for a comprehensive and ambitious Australia-EU trade agreement, signals a new era in the bilateral relationship.
At the core of the Agreement is a shared commitment to strengthening the rules-based global order and enhancing global governance. This reflects their shared values and adherence to international principles and standards.
Australia and the EU also share a commitment to addressing the impact of climate change, including through the implementation of the Paris Agreement, protecting the environment, and pursuing sustainable development. They are already cooperating closely in the Pacific, where collaboration on projects has delivered notable results, including on gender equality.
The Agreement enhances EU-Australia cooperation, including notably through addressing counter terrorism and cyber threats, promoting an effective WTO rules-based global trading system, taking forward security cooperation and promoting nuclear non-proliferation.
The Agreement also covers education, culture, research, innovation and trade, investment and tourism, where links are long standing and generate mutual benefits for EU and Australian citizens.
The Agreement will enter into force once it has been ratified by all Member States of the EU.
