UNICEF is deeply concerned for the safety and wellbeing of children involved in Venezuela’s ongoing street protests and demonstrations.
According to official sources, eight children between the ages of 14 and 17 have been killed in demonstrations over recent months, while many others have been injured. Numerous health centres and schools used by children have also been evacuated because of exposure to gas and fumes.
UNICEF stands in solidarity with the families of those children who have lost their lives or been injured, and reiterates its call for the protection of all children directly involved or otherwise affected by the demonstrations, as well as those in schools, hospitals and other venues where children are present.
UNICEF urges the State to ensure that respect for human rights and children’s safety is prioritized in any action taken to facilitate public order. Likewise, demonstrations should be carried out peacefully and with the utmost concern for the protection of children.
