The European Consensus on Development, adopted in June 2017, responds to the 2030 Agenda by setting out a new common framework for the development cooperation policy of the EU and its Member States.
The Consensus supports a balanced and integrated approach to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. It reaffirms that the focus of development cooperation remains centred on poverty eradication, recognising that tackling discriminations and inequalities and leaving no-one behind are also critical issues.
The Consensus also underlines the links between development and other policies, particularly humanitarian aid, environment, climate change, trade, migration and security policies. In addition, it sets out a strengthened approach to Policy Coherence for Development in the context of the SDGs and commits to stronger, more inclusive multi-stakeholder partnerships. Above all, it sets out a common vision for the EU and the Member States to pursue together.
The Consensus commits the EU and its Member States to produce a Joint Synthesis Report (JSR) on the Consensus on Development including the impact of their actions in support of the 2030 Agenda in developing countries, as a contribution to EU reporting to the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in 2019.
Further reports will be produced every four years. The EU and the Member States are currently in the process of producing the first of these reports. It will be based on information from existing reports and, in addition, on views and experiences from EU institutions, the Member States and relevant stakeholders.
This event is an opportunity to hear the views of key stakeholders on the EU and Member States’ track record in supporting the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in developing countries – and to offer ideas for the future. It will be used to gather input for the Joint Synthesis Report and, ultimately, to help develop better EU policies and practices. It follows a written consultation of stakeholders for the JSR.
