Let’s take a look where more people in international development are needed because, the higher the number of opportunities in a country, the better the chances of securing a job there.

We could divide these countries roughly into 4 groups.

North America

A classic choice when considering securing employment in international development. Many companies and donors involved in international development have their headquarters in the United States, particularly on the East Coast. The openings that a candidate may apply for are usually in-house positions with donor agencies including the United Nations, the World Bank or the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Western Europe

For those job seekers who want to enjoy life in one of the most affluent parts of the world (offering higher salaries and a better quality of life too) there are plenty of international development jobs in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France, and Belgium. So, if you want to work in international development but don’t see yourself working in the field, consider a position in Western Europe. Here you will find jobs at the headquarters of international development consulting firms or non-governmental organizations.

Africa

If you are more adventurous there are a high number of vacancies in Kenya, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The jobs you will find in these countries can be in cities such as Nairobi or in distressed and conflict-affected areas.

South Asia

This region is truly one of the contrasts. It has one of the fastest economic growth rates in the world and, at the same time, hundreds of millions of people live there in extreme poverty. From a job seeker’s perspective, this region offers a good life in a beautiful and much cheaper country. Countries such as India and Bangladesh have a large number of available positions in international development. You can discover the beauty of South Asia while developing your skills and gaining professional experience.
