ITU’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-19)

ITU’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-19)

ITU’s annual Global Symposium for Regulators, the world’s pre-eminent gathering of the global information and communication technology (ICT) regulatory and policy-making community.

With the theme of Inclusive connectivity: The future of regulation, this year’s event will be held in Port Vila at the invitation of the Government of Vanuatu. The symposium features specialist speakers and a dynamic programme focused around some of the most challenging topics facing today’s tech regulators.

A highlight of the official opening on Wednesday, 10 July will be a Leadership Debate led by Commissioners from the UN Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development focused on ‘Getting the Next 3.7 Billion Online’.

Other topics headlining this year’s event include the urgent need for a new, collaborative approach to 5th generation regulation, the continuing quest for additional wireless spectrum to support 5G mobile growth, innovative business models to drive infrastructure investment in challenging markets, and consumer protection issues. The event will also feature a special simulation exercise around emergency telecommunications.

Technology is evolving fast, and so is the regulatory landscape. ICTs now underpin virtually every economic sector – from agriculture, banking, climate change mitigation, education, e-government and health, to intelligent transport and smart water management systems – making the role of the ICT regulator more crucial than ever. Today, there is almost no economy that does not have its own, independent ICT regulator, managing vital issues and safeguarding and protecting consumers in an increasingly complex policy environment.

The Global Symposium for Regulators is open to regulators, policy-makers and members of ITU’s Development Sector.
