The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) launched a set of project impact stories to highlight the important role of technical cooperation in all aspects of trade and sustainable development; from gender integration into value chains and increasing women’s participation, to developing agribusiness, and enhancing food safety.

In West Africa, the access of artisanal fishery products from Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mauritania and Senegal to domestic, regional and international markets was enhanced. The proactive gender approach resulted in increased access to training for women, and support to women’s cooperatives. In the four countries, more than 63% of the participants who benefitted from the training were women.

In Indonesia, the sustainable development of the Pangasius value chain could be enhanced by improving quality and standards compliance and through training on the processing, packaging, and marketing of 19 seaweed-based foods such as noodles, juice, syrup and biscuits. Empowering women, who play a key role in the industry, allowed them to exploit alternative sources of income.

In Egypt enhanced food safety promotes sustainable food systems that deliver food safety and nutrition security and improve the competitiveness of the agri-food processing sector through access to support services, markets and trade opportunities, while ensuring economic, social and environmental sustainability.

These are just a few examples of project impact stories that are being showcased at the Aid for Trade Global Review 2019, which will take place at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters in Geneva from 3 to 5 July 2019, under the theme “Supporting Economic Diversification and Empowerment”.
