The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) hosted an event on the cross-cutting contribution of the Quality Infrastructure (QI) system to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The forum highlighted the many ways in which QI improves the health and safety of workers, how the upgrading of the quality infrastructure system in Ghana enables more exports and by demonstrating how standards help manage environmental discharges and energy efficiency.

“An effective and efficient quality infrastructure system is necessary to meet a country’s SDG related development policy objectives as they develop their industrial sector, improve their trade competitiveness in global markets, drive the efficient use of natural and human resources, ensure consumer health and safety, protect the environment and address climate change”, said Bernardo Calzadilla-Sarmiento, Director of the UNIDO Department of Trade, Investment and Innovation.

During the forum, UNIDO launched its newest publication “Sustainable Development and the Future of Quality Infrastructure”, which emphasizes the fundamental enabling function of an appropriate quality infrastructure for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its support for each SDG. It provides insights and examples of how quality infrastructure supports and underpins the implementation of the SDG and how Quality Infrastructure better positions developing countries to meet the SDGs.

The new publication builds on previous UNIDO publications including “The Role of Standards in the Context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”, “The Role of Accreditation in the Context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”, and “The Role of Metrology in the Context of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”.
