A record 6.3 million people in Sudan are experiencing a food crisis. The number, which accounts for 14 percent of the country’s population, is the highest on record since the introduction of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification analysis in Sudan in 2007.
Significant macroeconomic challenges which have resulted in high inflation rates, soaring food prices and shortages of foreign currency and cash are the main drivers of the current crisis.
While the UN and humanitarian partners are assessing the projected impact of these latest figures, food security and livelihoods response has been underway in priority locations.
The 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan for Sudan seeks US$1.1 billion to assist 4.4 million people but is only 31 percent funded so far.
Additional funding is urgently required to scale up the response to the newly identified food insecurity needs.
