Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, announced a contribution of €550 million for the period 2020-2022 to support the work of the Global Fund to end the epidemics of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide.
Commissioner Mimica made the announcement in Lyon where global leaders are gathering for the Fund’s pledging conference organised by French President, Emmanuel Macron. This follows the initial announcement made by Donald Tusk at the G7 Meeting one month ago.
Commissioner Mimica said, “Despite remarkable progress, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria are still threatening our societies, killing a child every two minutes and preventing us from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The good news is that these epidemics can be ended. But we need to work better together at every level to build better quality and stronger health systems for all. This is why the EU has decided to step up the fight and pledge an EU contribution to the Fund of €550 million”.
The total pledge of €550 million represents a 15% increase on the previous EU pledge of €475 million for the period 2017-2019. Thanks to similar increases in commitments from other key donors, the Global Fund is set to reach its ambitious target of $14 billion.
