The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Mark Lowcock, will allocate up to US$15 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to urgently scale up the response to the floods in South Sudan.
The allocation will be used to meet the life-saving needs of 620,000 flood-affected people, including emergency shelter and non-food items, health, food security and livelihoods, and water, hygiene and sanitation, as well as logistics support.
An additional US$10 million is being allocated from the South Sudan Humanitarian Fund for immediate assistance in the worst-hit areas.
Since July, more than 908,000 people have been affected by unusually heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding.
More than 3 million people were in need of assistance in the flood-affected areas even before the flooding began.
Some US$61.5 million is urgently required to save lives, and to ensure the continuity of the response in South Sudan.
