President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya launched the first project as part of an ambitious 100,000 affordable homes agreement between the government of Kenya, UNOPS, and Sustainable Housing Solutions, signed last year on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.
“Today, we are here for the launch of one of our strategic partners’ projects that will deliver 8,888 units. Habitat Heights is one of the projects of UNOPS and their partners,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The Habitat Heights development in Lukenya is part of Kenya’s broader national affordable housing programme, which aims to build 500,000 homes. Show homes have been constructed for two and three-bedroom apartments, which are now ready to view.
“This project, part of UNOPS Social Impact Investing Initiative (S3i), will lay the foundations for a more affordable and sustainable housing market in Kenya. The construction phase of the first homes is a significant step forward for the initiative,” said UNOPS Deputy Executive Director, Vitaly Vanshelboim.
To date, UNOPS S3i has announced several major affordable housing schemes in the Caribbean, Ghana, India, Kenya and Pakistan. More than 850,000 new affordable homes will be built in total as part of the broader initiative, making it one of the most ambitious affordable housing projects in the world.
