The consequences of gender inequality

“Gender equality is critical to the development and peace of every nation”, said Kofi Annan, the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations. It is an international objective under number five of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Despite the progress that has been made in this area, 2.8 billion women and girls currently live in countries that are not doing enough to improve their lives. 

Insufficient progress on structural issues at the root of gender inequality, such as legal discrimination, unfair social norms and attitudes, decision-making regarding sexual and reproductive issues and low levels of political participation, are undermining the ability to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5. The losses in achievement due to gender inequality range from 4.5%t to 74.7% depending on the country.
