Africa Climate Week 2020 will bring together representatives from the public and private sectors to exchange ideas and identify synergies in discussions, meetings and exhibitions on a diverse set of themes related to climate action and sustainable development.
The central objective of Africa Climate Week is to share ways for governments to implement the Paris Agreement in Africa, making use of all the planning tools and support available under the Paris Agreement.
In the context of this urgency, Africa Climate Week is taking place under the banner of “Partnering for transformation towards a low-carbon climate-resilient and prosperous Africa: managing risks, seizing opportunities.”
The event will be steered by an inter-ministerial committee, led by the Prime Minister of Uganda.
“We are proud that we will be able to steer this event on behalf of Africa,” said Dr. Mary Goretti Kitutu Kimono, Minister, Water and the Environment, Republic of Uganda. “We will have an inter-ministerial committee that is going to steer this, led by the Prime Minister himself, and we are going to see actions translated to the ground. Together with the Ministry of Education, we are planning to plant over 100 million trees on a dedicated day during the conference.”
The event is designed to mobilize and enhance the required partnerships and collaborative approaches, including:
- the urgent need to understand the risks and impacts of climate change and integrate this knowledge in planning at all levels and in all sectors;
- the urgency of delivering on existing commitments; and
- the urgency of giving all stakeholders clarity on the pathways and means of implementation for achieving carbon neutrality by mid-century and thus the objectives and long-term goals of the Convention and Paris Agreement.
Africa Climate Week is one of four Regional Climate Weeks to convene in 2020, alongside Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week, MENA Climate Week and Asia-Pacific Climate Week. Regional Climate Weeks are organized by the Nairobi Framework Partnership (NFP), which supports developing countries in preparing and implementing their NDCs.
The 2020 events will build on the success of the 2019 Regional Climate Weeks in: Accra, Ghana; Salvador, Brazil; and Bangkok, Thailand.
