Over one hundred thousand experts and specialists were required in 2019 in the development sector according to DevelopmentAid insider intelligence

More than 102,000 jobs were posted in 2019 by over 1,000 organizations working in the international development sector and these were made available for DevelopmentAid users throughout the year. Data generated by DevelopmentAid reveals the most popular sectors, organizations and countries where the need for employees and consultants was the most intense.

According to DevelopmentAid, half of the total number of job announcements posted in 2019 came from one hundred organizations. The biggest employer seeking expert and staff was the United Nations and its affiliated agencies.

The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Development Program (UNDP) and the UN World Food Program (UNWFP) posted over 10,000 job opportunities. Over 1,800 job announcements were published by the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office which supports and delivers the UK’s 2015 Aid Strategy in developing countries. Another 1,660 and 1,460 job openings were available at the World Bank and FHI 360 – Family Health International. Among the organizations who submitted impressive numbers of job opportunities were the Norwegian Refugee Council, the World Health Organization, ICF International and World Vision International. The TOP-10 organizations posted nearly 20,000 of the total job opportunities (one-fifth of the global number of available jobs).

DevelopmentAid users were able to access jobs related to over 80 sectors of international development (according to the organization’s internal classification criteria). Thus, individual consultants and specialists working in the health sector were required by almost 9,000 job announcements. Professionals with expertise in finance and accounting could apply for 7,700 jobs, while those in the media and communication sector had 7,600 job opportunities. Program and resource management and administration specialists were required to fill in almost 24,000 vacant positions throughout 2019.

Among the jobs announcements available for DevelopmentAid users, there were also almost 4,700 calls for experts in Fundraising, 2,800 calls for experts in the Gender issues and even 106 opportunities for consultants working in the nuclear sector.

According to Irina Bondarenco, the Director of the Career Center within DevelopmentAid, the high number of open positions available is still far less than the demand.

“Securing a contract has never been as challenging as it is now. In 2019, the DevelopmentAid Career Center noticed a growing trend among professionals to search and bid for tenders for individual consultants, as this opens new career opportunities and allows experts to work directly with donors or with contracting authorities. This is a wonderful way to introduce yourself to funding institutions and to be regularly invited to participate in their projects”, she added.

The geography of job openings in the development sector can be described as being proportionally divided between those regions of the world with the highest development activity. Thus, the African continent accounted almost 29% of the job announcements (nearly 30,000 announcements). Almost 24% of the job opportunities concerned North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. The regions of South and Southeast Asia each totaled around 7,000 jobs vacancies as did the Middle East whilst only 1,318 jobs were available in the Eastern Asia region. A little over two thousand jobs were available in the Oceania region. At the same time, there were almost 23,000 jobs available on the European continent.
