The United Nations is seeking $107 million to support life-saving humanitarian operations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), where more than 10 million people remain in need.
There are acute food, nutrition, health, water, and sanitation needs, but funding levels for humanitarian operations in DPRK remain historically low.
Last year, the humanitarian appeal was only 27 percent funded, at $32 million. As a result, only 2.5 million of the 3.8 million people initially targeted for assistance received aid.
Within the limitations of the low level of funding in 2019, humanitarian actors reached 750,000 people with nutritious food and provided treatment to more than 41,000 acutely malnourished children under age 5 and safe drinking water to more than 138,000 people.
This year, humanitarian assistance programmes aim to reach 5.5 million people, with a focus on children and mothers.
