Humanitarian fund allocates $12 million to support emergency response in Central African Republic

The Humanitarian Coordinator for the Central African Republic (CAR), Denise Brown, has allocated US$12 million from the Humanitarian Fund to support emergency response under the Humanitarian Response Plan, including $3 million to cover COVID-19 projects.

The allocation will enable the UN and humanitarian partners to implement priority projects in health, water, hygiene and sanitation, camp management, shelter and non-food items, food security, nutrition, protection and logistics sectors, as well as COVID response.

The humanitarian situation in CAR continues to deteriorate due to conflict and increasing political tensions linked to the electoral process, with more than half of the population – or 2.6 million people – in need of humanitarian assistance and protection. Nearly 700,000 people are internally displaced.

With 94 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of 5 May, CAR is facing increasing needs within a context of extremely limited national capacities to detect and respond.

Only a third of the population has access to clean water, while the country has the second-highest maternal and third highest child mortality rates worldwide.

The 2020 Humanitarian Response Plan seeks $401 million but is only 28 percent funded so far.

In 2019, the CAR Humanitarian Fund allocated $39 million and targeted 1.3 million vulnerable people.
