Workshop
The development of trade routes between Asia and Europe will require substantial investments in energy and transport infrastructure in Central Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
Attracting greater private sector investment is increasingly critical to bridging the region’s nearly 300% annual infrastructure financing shortfall and building on recent connectivity inroads.
Infrastructure breakthroughs include construction of rail lines linking the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Kazakhstan as a gateway to Europe. The PRC has also invested in a variety of energy infrastructure projects in Southeast Asia such as the ‘first Belt & Road power grid cooperation project’ in the Lao PDR to enhance connectivity across its northern provinces and regionally.
This ADBI virtual workshop will feature papers that examine the economic and strategic impacts of energy and transport infrastructure connecting Asia and Europe, as well as policies for attracting private finance to sustainably develop new regional projects.
Objectives:
- Improve understanding of the impacts of energy and transport infrastructure connecting Asia and Europe
- Stimulate policy dialogue and research on project development and private financing
- Detail policy recommendations for fostering regional cooperation and integration
Output:
- Greater recognition of energy and transport infrastructure development and financing needs to connect Asia and Europe among policymakers and experts
- Identification of new avenues for policy research and innovation
- Papers from this virtual workshop will be considered for inclusion in the ADBI Working Paper Series and a special issue of the Asia Europe Journal
